Privacy Policy
Greater Greater Washington Commons (“GGWC” or the “Organization”) takes your privacy very seriously. This Privacy Policy covers how GGWC treats personal information that it collects on this website (ggwashcommons.org), through the Organization’s donation platforms, as well as through social media and through various online fundraising and marketing efforts. In this policy, you can learn what kind of information is collected, when and how that information might be used, how the information is protected, and the choices you have with respect to your personal information.
What personal information is collected and how is it collected?
Personal information is any information that is linked or reasonably linked to an identified or identifiable natural person. We collect some personal information and some non-personal information in three ways: directly from the user, from our Web server logs, and through cookies and similar technology. We don’t share any of your information with third parties except as described in this Privacy Policy. The following describes the three ways in which we collect information from GGWC’s website visitors, donors, supporters, and followers:
User-supplied information: If you choose to sign up for our mailing list, attend a GGWC event, or make a donation, we may ask you to provide your name, address, phone number, email address, other personal information, and payment information, as applicable. Similarly, we may see information that you publicly provide when following GGWC on social media. If you choose to provide personal or sensitive information other than the information described above, you do so at your own risk. Information that you provide when reaching out to contact GGWC may be used to respond to your inquiry or as otherwise described below, and GGWC may also use information you provide to communicate with you in the future. If you do not wish to receive such communications, you may opt out (unsubscribe) as described below.
Web server logs: When you visit this website, we may track information about your visit and store that information in web server logs, which are records of the activities on this website. The servers automatically capture and save the information electronically. Examples of the information we may collect include:
- your unique Internet protocol address;
- the name of your unique Internet service provider;
- the town/city, county/state and country from which you access this website;
- the kind of browser or computer you use;
- the number of links you click within the site;
- the date and time of your visit;
- the web page from which you arrived to this website;
- the pages you viewed on the site; and
- certain searches/queries that you conducted via this website.
The information we collect in web server logs helps us administer the site, analyze its usage, protect this website and its content from inappropriate use, and improve the user’s experience.
Cookies: We may use cookies, pixel tags, and other technologies to automatically collect non-personal information when you visit this website. A “cookie” is a small text file that may be used to collect information about your activity on the website. For example, when someone visits a page within this Website, a cookie is placed on the user’s machine (if the user accepts cookies) or is read if the user has visited this website previously. You may set most browsers to notify you if you receive a cookie, or you may choose to block cookies with your browser, but if you do, you may not be able to personalize features on this website. Some of the cookies we use may be flash cookies or Adobe cookies and, depending on your browser, these cookies may not normally be deleted when your cookies are deleted. Please note that the “do not track” settings on your browser generally do not block cookies. Check your browser to determine where these types of cookies are stored and how they may be blocked and/or deleted. Pixel tags are very small images or small pieces of data embedded in images, also known as “web beacons” or “clear GIFs,” that can recognize cookies, the time and date a page is viewed, a description of the page where the pixel tag is placed, and similar information from your computer or device.
How do we use your information?
The information we collect from you may be used in one of the following ways:
To improve this website: Like other websites, GGWC collects information to enhance your visit to this website and deliver advertising that is more appropriate to our users. We continually strive to improve this website based on the information and feedback we receive from you.
To improve the Organization’s content and programs: Your information helps us to refine and improve the content we provide on this website and elsewhere, to pursue programs that are responsive to the community and consistent with our mission, and more effectively respond to your needs, requests, opinions, and comments.
To send periodic emails and fundraising requests: The contact information you provide may be used to send emails that are responsive to your questions and requests and may be used to send periodic emails regarding news, organizational updates, calls to action, or other information, or to solicit your support and contributions. If at any time you would like to unsubscribe from receiving future emails, we include unsubscribe instructions within each email message.

GGWC does not sell, rent, or lease mailing lists or other personal information of its users or donors to unaffiliated third parties, and will not make your personal information available to any unaffiliated parties, except as follows:

Other parties with your consent. GGWC may share information about you with third parties other than those described above (such as sponsors or advertisers) when you consent to such sharing. For purposes of this privacy policy, to the extent permitted by applicable law you will be deemed to have given consent to share your information with a third party in a particular circumstance if we provide you with an opportunity to opt out of such sharing and you fail to do so.
How long do we retain your information?
We will retain your information until the earlier of:
- you asking us to delete the information;
- the Organization’s decision to cease using its existing data providers; or
- the Organization decides that the value in retaining the information is outweighed by the costs of retaining it.
How do we protect your information?
We employ commercially reasonable methods to ensure the security of the information you provide to us and the information we collect automatically. This includes using standard security protocols and working only with reputable third-party vendors. For example, our third-party security vendor regularly conducts scans to ensure we maintain our Payment Card Industry (PCI) certification.
